NCIS’ AUSTRALIAN CONNECTIONS

25th November 2009

Australia loves NCIS. It is one the top rating US drama shows in Australia, regularly out-rating the CSI and Law and Order franchises. Mark Harmon said in an interview for an Australian newspaper earlier this year said that we understood what the show was about before the USA did. Given the connections between Australia and NCIS, it’s no wonder the show is dear in our hearts.

Everyone knows that show-runner Shane Brennan is an Australian, but did you know Sean Murray is too? He holds dual Australian/US citizenship. His mother is an Aussie and he spent a lot of his childhood down here.

NCIS’ first Director, Tom Morrow, was played by Alan Dale. Born in New Zealand, Alan was a regular face in Australian soaps for much of his early career.

Our wildlife has managed a few mentions. The coastal taipan (one of the world’s deadliest snakes), and the blue ringed octopus both supplied the means of death in episodes. Who can forget “Some idiot smuggled a koala on board a submarine”? That one is my personal contender for Best Line of the Season.

In the season 1 episode “High Seas” the aircraft carrier is involved in a rescue at sea. The footage used to show the rescue isn’t a US Navy rescue. Uh uh. It’s archive footage of the Royal Australian Navy rescuing English solo sailor Tony Bullimore. Not sure which time, as they have had to haul him out of the sea on several occasions.

Numerous places and people have been name-checked. Not to mention the use of colloquial language not usually used by Americans, but very common amongst Australians! Add to this music by the occasional Australian artist such as Missy Higgins.

It can be a lot of fun spotting the references in the episodes. Have a look at the Australian NCIS Connections page. Have you spotted these? Are there some that others have missed?

SHAME ON CHANNEL 10 – TELLING LIES AGAIN

24th November 2009

A couple of months ago, I willingly handed out bouquets to Channel 10 for their “special encore presentation” of “Truth and Consequences” and the NCIS: Los Angeles premiere. This time I’m handing out the brickbats.

When the episode “Endgame” finished screening on 17th November 2009 here in Australia, Channel 10 boldly ran the “New NCIS next week” promo with the voice-over promising a new episode next week, 24th November 2009.

They lied.

Without fanfare, Channel 10 simply removed season 7 NCIS from the line-up last night. Australia’s ratings period ends this coming Saturday, 28th November 2009.

We are moving into our summer viewing period (all the garbage that Channel 10 got lumbered with that has probably already been axed in the USA). Not everyone wants to watch second rate rubbish over the summer. In a country were the average temperature in the middle of summer is rapidly approaching 38 degrees celsius (100 degrees fahrenheit), many of us would prefer to spend our evenings indoors. In my opinion Australia’s ratings season should be tied into the USA’s. After all, nine tenths of our programs are American produced.

This lying behavior isn’t anything new from Channel 10 either. Last year, at the end of the ratings season, Channel 10 announced that “Cloak” was the “season final” prompting screams of anguish and outrage from fans. They were also flooded with complaints about their lying about the episode being the season final. It looks like this year, Channel 10 had decided they didn’t want a repeat of last year, so they simply lied about screening a new episode. Channel 10….you wonder why you’re third in the network rankings? It’s because you treat your viewers like imbeciles. When are you going to realize that in NCIS you don’t just have a television program – you have a phenomenon?

I encourage all my readers to let Channel 10 know what you think of their underhand behavior. Go to http://ten.com.au/ and scroll down the bottom of the screen to the “contact us” link. Channel 10 claimed in their “The Office” promo last night that they listened to the viewers. Ya think?

POLLS & PARTICIPATION

23rd November

Another of my favourite little rants here, i.e. polls and participation or lack thereof. The other day, and not for the first time, a member has brought it to my attention in a discussion thread about the frequency or infrequency of poll changes.

First and foremost, poll frequency depends on my work schedule, then of course there is the poor participation, although admittedly in the last few polls we have actually hit the 600 mark!! The usual number of pollsters is between 200 and 250!!! I think you’ll agree this is hardly inspiring. So people please vote, the more the merrier – plus it inspires me to put up new polls, since I have loads of ideas for them.

Y con esto y un bizcocho se acabó lo que se dió.
